Natural Talent...

...I have spent countless hours in my life questioning how one gets to be good at certain things. Is it natural talent, or can you plug away and study for hours, practice and be just as good as those that seem to just 'get' things easily.  Honestly after all these years I am leaning more and more towards the idea that you really do have to have natural talent, to be gifted in some way, to be truly good at something.  These photos go a long way to proving this theory.

You see, this is one of the things I love about the dynamic between Lucia and I; we're both interested in the same things, but different aspects of the same things- so where I can school her on fashion and beauty, she returns the favour with weddings and photography. Not in so many years have I had such an interesting and engaging friendship.

...I am getting tired of wedding shoe shots! It saddens me to say this. I have been looking at wedding blogs and magazines long before I actually got married. A few years ago I felt there was a change in wedding photography with more photographers taking a chance and shooting more than just the standard 'wedding' shots. There seemed to be a change happening that made wedding photography interesting. A lot of this had to do with photographers taking quirkier shots of the smaller details, like the bride and grooms' shoes. I fell in love with these shots and had a few done for my own wedding. I love how they turned out.  But then I started noticing these shots everywhere, and they have become just as common as the more traditional photos. This saddens me.

...It's funny how as soon as someone mentions something, you tend to see that very same thing a lot more.  Ever since Edie showed me a Tim Walker photo in Vogue, I find his images popping up everywhere.  Magical is the only word really.

I posted a while ago my thoughts about a Terry Richardson shot of Lindsay Lohan. Since then there has been controversy growing about Richardson due to comments made by model Rie Rasmussen.  I've been reading the stories that are now emerging about him and his behavior on photo shoots. (Go to jezebel.com and read all about it - it's pretty juicy stuff) To be frank I'm not surprised at all.  Looking at his work in his books a few years ago, you can clearly see the type of person he is. What I am finding disturbing is how his behaviour is well known in the business yet he has been allowed to become a major player in the fashion world.   What is this saying about us?

I Need To Talk About This...

We all know that Terry Richardson loves to shock and balances on a very fine line between art and pornography.  His photos have always been thought provoking and to many have been the epitome of  'edgy' and 'cool'.  Unlike many of the 'photography police' that criticise photographers like Bill Henson and Richardson, I have not been one to be easily shocked or disgusted by their photos.  That was until I saw these Lindsay Lohan pictures.  


I am deeply disturbed by them. 


I have seen many shots like this before by Richardson but by using Lohan as the subject removes all traces of edginess and instead is capitalizing on her mistakes and troubles.  Lohan is not a character that has a stable past, where by shooting her like this would mean that these images could be thought provoking or make some sort of statement. Instead by using Lohan, they are simply enabling her current unhealthy behaviour.


Do these images really reflect who she is or are they reflecting how she thinks people want to see her?
